Blood sugar. You can experience a dip in energy about an hour after eating carbohydrates which most people use to fuel their workouts. This is due to insulin release timing and if timed incorrectly can occur during your workout.

Burn less fat. When sugar is scarce in the bloodstream your body is forced to use its only remaining energy source, fat. If weight loss is your goal do not eat before gym as your body will have no need to access the fat stores otherwise.

More energy. You need glycogen stored in your body to perform the high intensity activities at the gym. If you eat protein and some carbohydrates an hour or so before it will make a big difference compared to training on an empty stomach. Energy is very important if you are strength training.

Cramps. Eating too much or too soon before a workout doesn’t give your body enough time to digest properly and when you become active cramping will soon follow.
