Is political correctness bad?

What is the upside and downside to political correctness?

People become too sensitive. Life is hard, the world is harsh place. If we don’t learn to deal with that which does not agree with us we become a weak species and ill prepared for actual problems in life. After all character is built through adversity.

It makes us focus on the wrong issues. For example, nit picking males use of words in regards to women takes attention of men and women who engage in human and sex trafficking of young girls and women. “Islamophobia” prevents intellectual discourse on the issues of religion and radicalism in western society.

Restricts free speech. Once we start limiting what people can and cannot say society as we know it begins the process of decay. There will always be words certain groups will not like but we cannot impede communication for the benefit of a few.

Slurs and certain terms were often coupled with discrimination and taunts. Throughout history oppression and discrimination of minorities were exacerbated by stereotypes and epithets. These verbal attacks helped cause a divide in society and ingrained a mentality where some groups were considered above or below another.

People have the right not to be verbally abused and insulted. There are laws to prevent people from physical abuse or negligence in regards to health, there is no reason why we shouldn’t have protection against verbal abuse.
